Sustainable Resource Management: CURRENT WATER SITUATION

29 August 2008

Over the past week, rainfall intensities varied from 14, 23, 33 and 41
mm at the Theewaterskloof, Voelvlei, Wemmershoek and Steenbras Dams
respectively. The total gross storage in the system increased by 3
million m³ from 886 million m³ to 889 million m3. The storage is now
15 million m3 above the median storage level forecast in December 2007.

The Theewaterskloof and Berg River Dams are full, while the
Wemmershoek, Steenbras (Upper and Lower combined) and Voelvlei Dams
still require 3%, 4% and 4% of their gross capacity respectively.

According to the South African Weather Services (SAWS), there is a high
chance of showers on Thursday and on Saturday/Sunday (28th and 30th /
31st August). A cold front may be expected on next Tuesday/Wednesday
(2nd / 3rd September). CSAG’s (Climate System Analysis Group) latest
seasonal forecasts indicate that the rainfall for the remainder of
winter should not be below average.
